In the Story Pilgrim's Progress, Christian and his companion Pliable, while fleeing from the city of Destruction, fall into a bog called The Slough of Despond. Pliable climbs out by himself and heads back the way he came. Christian is pulled out by a person called Help who asked Christian, "Why did you not look for the steps?" Christians can fall into despondency where they lose sight of the hope and sink into inactivity. In Psalm 13 we discover the steps out of despondency.
