In today's passage we read that Jesus knew that His time had come to leave this world. This Jesus whom all things had been put under his power had come not to be served, but to serve. The one who could have snuffed out all His enemies came to lay down His life and the time for this was at hand. To help His disciples understand what He is going to do for them He gives them a living picture.
